No LVL 1 or LVL 8 spells either (but it does still apply in stores). Now it is like the newer Final Fantasies, where the weaker spells are worth less than the stronger ones. That feat couldn't be done in the NES nor the PSX version under normal speed! -Magic system is re-vamped, no long does a magic spell take up only 1 MP. I reached LVL 5 AND beat Garland within 15 MINUTES.
